1. Sycamore Valley Open Space, Danville
The signature East Bay look, five minutes from Danville. Rolling hills, oak trees, a creek, and Mount Diablo views. Golden in summer and fall, green in spring. Free parking, rarely crowded.
Best for: the classic golden-hills session, close to home.
2. Shell Ridge Open Space, Walnut Creek
Rolling hills and oak woodland 15–20 minutes from Danville. Famous for spring wildflowers (March–April) and ridgetop views of Mount Diablo. Use the Marshall Drive entrance; the other lot fills fast.
Best for: spring wildflower sessions.
3. Las Trampas Wilderness, San Ramon
Rugged wilderness 15 minutes from Danville: oak woodlands, creek canyons, and 360-degree views from the ridges. Trails are steep, so plan on a 10–15 minute uphill walk.
Best for: dramatic views and adventurous families.
4. Briones Regional Park, Lafayette
Oak-covered rolling hills about 25 minutes from Danville, with panoramas of Mount Diablo and Mount Tamalpais. Green with wildflowers in spring, golden by summer. Little shade, so avoid midday heat.
Best for: big-sky golden hour sessions.
5. Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, Livermore
The most remote-feeling spot on this list, about 30 minutes out. Open grassland, rare spring wildflowers, and ridgetop views stretching to the Sierra Nevada. The drive in is twisty with no cell service, but worth it.
Best for: crowd-free spring sessions.
6. Mount Diablo State Park
Fifteen minutes from Danville, with two very different looks: Rock City’s carved sandstone formations (kids love climbing them) and the summit’s 360-degree panoramas. $10 entry per vehicle; gates close at sunset, so weekdays work best.
Best for: dramatic rocks and summit views.
7. Coyote Hills Regional Park, Fremont
The bay sunset pick. Grassland hills dropping into tidal marsh, about 30–35 minutes from Danville. The paved Bayview Trail loop is stroller-friendly, and sunset over the water is the signature shot. $5 parking; busy on weekends.
Best for: bay sunsets and marsh landscapes.
8. Lake Chabot Regional Park, Castro Valley
A calm lake ringed by eucalyptus and oaks, 25–30 minutes from Danville. Morning reflections on the water are the shot to get. Paved shoreline trails are stroller-friendly, which makes this one of the easiest locations with little kids. $5 parking.
Best for: easy lakeside sessions.
