As a birth and family photographer, I often get asked: “How can we prepare our older child to meet their new sibling?”
That first meeting is pure magic — but also full of emotions, questions, and sometimes a little overwhelm.
Here are a few gentle tips to make it easier:
🌿 Talk to your child about the baby ahead of time. Let them feel kicks, show them ultrasound photos, or let them help fold baby clothes.
🌿 Give them a little “big helper” role. They can bring a small gift for the baby or choose a toy or blanket.
🌿 Keep the first meeting calm and low-pressure. A quiet moment at home or in the hospital, without a big crowd, helps them settle into this big change.
🌿 Remember: your older child is still your baby. We sometimes start calling them “the big one, ” but they still need your hugs, kisses, and patience.
🌿 Praise their small efforts. Celebrate how gentle or curious they are. Avoid correcting every little touch — they’re learning, too.
🌿 Let them hold the baby safely — sitting on a bed or couch, with your support nearby.
Most importantly, let the moment unfold naturally. There’s no need for perfection — only love❤️
✨ If you have friends or clients expecting another baby, feel free to share this post with them — a little reminder can make those first days even sweeter!
